When noted US wine writer Jon Bonné wrote the “The New California” he described the young winemakers paving a new road for winemaking in “The Golden State”. Without question a member of this new guard, Matthew Rorick of Forlorn Hope is quick to distinguish himself from many of his contemporaries, and takes care to explain that is not low or non-interventionist. Rorick’s understands that despite any decision made during the winemaking process the winemaker is only ever working with what the vineyard has given.

 

Since his first vintage under his Forlorn Hope label in 2005, Rorick’s focus has been on finding the best fruit from special vineyards across northern California, and working with growers to ensure that the vineyard is farmed to maximize fruit quality. This search has led him to workin with almost unheard varieties such as Picpoul, Trousseau Gris, Tinta Cao, St Laurent and Valdigue.
