In 1984 James and Annie Millton established their 30 hectare wine domaine
on the banks of the Te Arai River near Manutuke, Gisborne. Since the beginning all wines have been produced from biodynamically grown grapes, and bottled on the property.
Their vineyards were certified organic in 1989 and in 2009 Demeter certification was achieved.
Their vineyards and wines were the first in New Zealand to gain full organic certification and amongst the first 10 winegrowers in the world to start the biodynamic winegrowing practice. They also grow citrus fruits, olives and walnuts and they have their own manure herd of milking Red Shorthorn cattle. James is considered one of the pioneers of biodynamic winegrowing.
