Georgia is widely recognised as the birthplace of wine where wild vines are thought to have been first domesticated over 8000 years ago.

In 2006 after a chance meeting, John Wurdeman and 8th generation Kakhetian winegrower Gela Patalishvili established Pheasant’s Tears to help preserve the rich heritage of indigenous Georgian grape varieties. So far they have over 420 of the recorded 525 growing in their vineyards. All the wines are fermented and aged in qvevri, the traditional Georgian clay fermentation vessel buried permanently in the earth. Time in the earth is crucial to the upbringing of these wines, allowing them to naturally stabilise without the addition of sulphur.

A Georgian legend says that only the finest wines can make a pheasant cry.
